We will explore in this week’s Torah portion a brilliantly troubling narrative (Genesis 16) appreciating how Biblical narrative compels our participation by posing tough moral questions. Comparing the treatment of an Egyptian maidservant to its inverse, the enslavement of the Israelites in Egypt, we will consider why the Torah might hint that it’s not just us that had a redemptive Exodus- and the theological and moral implications of this hint. We will enjoy close reading, and also be explicit about the methodologies that you might use to read Torah meaningfully yourself- and there will be a great chance to connect to others, share ideas and have Shabbat lunch together.
