From Our Lips - Celebrating Synagogue Music

Saturday, 13 April, 2024 5 Nisan 5784

10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

At a time of turmoil people often turn to music to soothe troubled souls.
And what better music to turn to than the music of prayer – music being able to powerfully lift the words soaring on high.

We will be having a special Shabbat morning service on Saturday 13th April, as part of the From Our Lips UK Synagogue Music festival, organised by the European Cantors Association, in Synagogues around the UK in the first few months for 2024.

Our musical tradition, here at Westminster Synagogue, has its roots in the music of West London Synagogue, drawn from the 19th and 20th Century European tradition with notable composers such as Hart, Lewandowski, Mombach, Salaman, Sulzer and Waly, music from The Voice of Prayer and Praise (“The Blue Book”), and pieces by WLS organists Charles Verrinder and Percy Rideout. The repertoire has expanded to include more recent music from Israeli composers such as Nurit Hirsch and contemporary American musicians including Cantor Alisa Pomerantz-Boro, as well as compositions by Westminster’s former organist and chazan Harold Lester, former organist Raymond Fischer and one of the current organists, Alexander Knapp.

During the service, led by Rabbi Kamila Kopřivová, we will be able to enjoy music from four musicians; Cantorial Soloists Yoav Oved and Sara Feldmann Brummer will be singing accompanied by the synagogue's two organists Alexander Knapp and Joanna Smith. We look forward to celebrating Music and Shabbat with you!

Sorry, Registration has ended.
