The election for our representatives for the Board of Deputies is coming up at our AGM on the 4th June. The Board of Deputies works on a range of areas and issues, and Westminster Synagogue are represented by two elected deputies and Under-35 observers – currently Ruth Abrams, Jane Power and Max Burt.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews is the voice of the British Jewish community, the first point of call for government, the media and others seeking to understand Jewish community interests and concerns. The Board of Deputies works in a range of areas on a host of issues. They work to combat antisemitism from wherever it emanates, express the community’s bond with the State of Israel, defend Jewish education and educate wider society about Judaism and build bridges through interfaith relations.

The Board of Deputies is an affiliate organisation; it comprises nearly 300 deputies directly elected by around 150 synagogues and communal organisations, from youth movements, to social welfare charities and regional councils, ensuring everyone has a voice.  Our two Deputies attend monthly meetings and have a vote each for the next 3-year cycle. Under-35 Observers attend the meetings, but have no vote. The Under-35 Observer position is a result of the Board embarking on a determined campaign to engage with younger community members and make sure that their voices and opinions are not excluded from Board debate. Please note, the positions of Deputies can also be taken up by someone under 35, however the observer gives another opportunity to take part in this important organisation.

To be able to stand as a candidate for a Deputy position or the Under-35 Observer, you need to be:

  • Jewish
  • Aged 18 plus
  • Have been a member of the synagogue for at least one year prior to election
  • Not an undischarged bankrupt or convicted of a serious criminal offence
