Returning to Awe: An Intensive in Preparation for High Holy Days

Saturday, 13 September, 2025 20 Elul 5785

3:00 PM - 9:00 PM

As we approach High Holy Days, Selichot is a chance to intellectually and spiritually prepare ourselves with our community. Our Selichot service this year will again conclude an afternoon of learning with our adult education team - Returning to Awe: An Intensive in Preparation for High Holy Days. Join us for a melodic and meditative Selichot service in the Reinhart Library, followed by a dinner to reflect on our day of learning and prayer.

Return us to You, and we shall return
(Lamentations 5:21)

Returning to Awe - A Saturday Gathering for the High Holy Days

The High Holidays ask something of us. To come back: to self, to community, to the questions that matter.

This special Shabbat, 13th September, is a chance to begin that return with others.
Not only through ritual, but through learning, singing, silence, and conversation.

We’ll explore what it means to encounter this time not just as tradition, but as a call to transformation. There will be space for personal reflection and shared discovery. Time to ask big questions. Time to eat together.

Whether you’re a regular, returning after a while, or simply curious, you’re welcome.
Come as you are. Let’s return to awe, together.

2:30pm - Arrival & Registration
3:00pm - Intensive session 1 -

“Father, where is the sheep for the burnt offering?”

With Rabbi Kamila

At the heart of the High Holy Days stands the haunting story of the Akedah — the Binding of Isaac. Is this a story about Abraham or Isaac? About God and us? About faith, fear, or love? Together, we will take a close look at this iconic Torah reading, exploring what the text itself says, how the Rabbis interpreted it, and why we return to it every Rosh Hashanah.

4:30pm - Session 2 -
Two options: Rabbi Zahavit or Yael Roberts

Rav Rehumi doesn’t make it home for Yom Kippur (based on Ketubot 62b)
with Rabbi Zahavit

A melodrama in under 50 words exploring the tension between family and work and the world-shattering power of hurt feelings.

"The King is in the Field”: the mystical love and awe of Elul
with Yael Roberts

R. Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder of Chabad, writes in his main book Likutei Torah about the role of love and awe in the month of Elul as we prepare for High Holidays. Using the metaphor of  “The King is in the Field”, he describes the closeness of God to humanity at this time of year. Join us to explore this 18th century mystical text together.

6:00pm - Mincha and Selichot Service, leading into Chuliyot Community Singing with Yael and Yoav
7:30pm - Supper, with a short teaching from Rabbi Zahavit
